Generally speaking the average person spends much more time at work then at home. However, remember that it might be difficult to learn certain subjects on your own or over the computer, keep this in mind when scheduling online courses.

It is a difficult task choosing a school and a career path. However, there are many options. Take a moment to look through a book or catalog on some of the things you might do if you did attain a degree or certification in a certain area. This might help you make your final decision.

I find in the technical profession, that people bend the truth, since without it most managers cannot see past the direct links of keywords in their jobs and the resume application. So they “pad” to make themselves more attractive and get to the next step. So how do we avoid this?

First and foremost, remember one simple truth - a piece of paper can never define who you are. Who you are resonates beyond paper and ink. The key is the expression of that character and most people limit themselves to a simple resume to get that point across. Stop limiting yourself. Playing conventionally will not improve your position of being successful, it only heaps you into the pile of nameless paper, making you as unrecognizable as the next. Do we really think that better words on that resume are going to make the difference. The first thing we need to do is get the person to pick up the resume. A few ideas for how to make that happen:

Send the resume in a special format. I have found for the most important things (and I think job searching for a career is one of them), sending things via FEDEX is a key way to ensure that the person will open it. Time, money and effort are all shown with this and reflect a level of distinction few others are showing. (This has been reflective in our firms billing system for example. We use to email invoices to hiring managers. Payments were delayed, etc. We switched to sending FEDEX, bills are paid on time and normally ahead of terms. We have not no missed or skipped invoices either. People know when they receive the package, they need to open it and read it).
Make sure when they have it in hand, that the read it and not just put it down. Customization. Yes, this takes time but is the only way for the manager not to think that he is one of a million recipients of the same message. Know the role, know the hiring manager’s name, know intimate details about the company and have an opening statement that shows you are an insider who is up to speed on what is going on there.
Make an impact quickly. People waste about a quarter of the first page with their name/address/summary that offers little to the reader. Make the first thing they see a good reason for them to continue reading. You have hooked them with steps 1 & 2, do not lose them with a resume that is boring. Impact statements, signs of concrete substance and positive environmental impact at your old positions. Savings - hard numbers. Facts. Make the most out of the little space you have on that little white piece of paper.
These are just some of the steps in making your job search process easier. However, I think it draws to the fact that when the process is done right, there is no need to lie. If you need to lie in addition to all of this, that position is simply not for you.

When some people say ‘covering letter’, they don’t mean a covering letter at all, but a full letter of application.

A two or three page letter of application is a detailed piece of persuasive writing to convince an employer that you’re worth considering for the job, but it isn’t a covering letter.

A covering letter (U.S. ‘cover letter’) is a brief one-pager introducing another document that sits underneath it, most commonly your CV. Many employers will use it to decide whether to read your CV or file both quietly under W.P.B. (Waste Paper Bin). So covering letters are important.

When are covering letters REALLY important?

There are three situations when you use a covering letter:
· When returning an application form for an advertised post
· With a CV in response to an advertised post

In these two cases the covering letter may NOT be so important. All that’s required is a short couple of lines saying ‘Please find enclosed…’ and ‘I look forward to…’. It might not do any harm to add some detail but it probably won’t make much difference. The bottom line is that they’ve asked you to apply –- the door is partially open.

· With a CV when no post has been advertised

This is the crunch situation. CV plus covering letter is the main way of getting into companies who aren’t openly recruiting. But an employer has no reasons to be interested in your CV unless you provide some.

Getting Started – sample format

Here is what your letter’s going to look like:

DO make sure you get the name of the person to write to. Research shows that ‘Dear Sir/Madam’ is a turn off.

Now you’ve got started, each step is a paragraph of your letter… As you go through them keep to the point and don’t use flowery language.

Para 1

Write a short paragraph saying what (or who) has motivated you to write. Say what kind of work or placement you are looking for. The ‘who’ can be vital. If someone has suggested you apply, it amounts to a recommendation.

Para 2

Start a fresh paragraph explaining why you want to work there and the contribution you can offer. Base this on whatever you can find out about them. The key is to make what you say seem unique –- something they might need that not everyone else can offer.

Para 3

Here you refer to your attached CV, emphasising the two or three points that you think will interest the employer.

Para 4

Finish by saying that you would be pleased to attend an interview and (if appropriate) when. If it feels right, you can say instead that you will ring them on a specific date to ask for feedback on your CV.

Then all you need to do is check and sign your letter.

Why you want this job

What job and why you want it. Make sure you mention this rather important point.

It’s your cover letter, not your memoir

You’ve got one piece of paper to say the pertinent information that needs to be said. Keep it on point. Two or three paragraphs is enough. If you are using a cover letter template, you’ll see they are only one page. Stick to that!

Don’t Reveal too Much of the Resume

Illustrate a point from your resume (concisely), but do not provide so much info in your cover letter that is already in the resume there is no reason for the person to read the resume.

Show the “Professional Working You”

If you are a friendly, pleasant worker with a positive attitude. Make sure you show that. We don’t mean being disrespectful here. Just friendly professionalism. The structure of your cover letter template should help you with this point as well.

Many people today pass out emails like they once passed out phones and addresses. Give it all. Don’t just expect them to hire you or contact you via your email. Address, phone, cell phone, email, and even an alternate contact or additional message number should you be unavailable

Quality Control

You already know how important a cover letter is, so don’t rush through it. Treat it with the same care you used for your résumé. Check your facts, your grammar, your spelling, and even get a second reading by another. It is your presentation of you. Make it matter!

Remember, the more you can do to create a presentation and introduction of yourself that makes that potential employer want to turn to the resume and read it, the better your chances of getting an interview will be. Don’t think that the cover letter can be rapidly dashed off or a short written note that you didn’t put much professionalism into.
