GPS, Today Is Still Not Accurate As It Should Be
November 5, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Today, people are taking advantage of the many benefits that they can get by using GPS and in fact, the latest model automobiles are in fact, being equipped with GPS navigation systems and the time is also not far away when GPS navigation becomes common feature in every new automobile being sold in not only the US, but also in the rest of the world.
Increasing Popularity
Cell phone GPS is now becoming very popular and today, it allows you to, whenever you call the police or even fire department these authorities will be able to immediately know your location – thanks to these new devices. In fact, people now are actually taking this technology for granted – much in the same way that the Internet is also being taken for granted today.
It is interesting to note that this technology was first developed in the seventies and was at that time only being used by the military forces of the United States of America. In fact, even now the military (US) can cut off GPS access at any time that it so desires. What’s more, before this technology became so commonplace its civilian use was rather limited and it did not go beyond what can best be described as Selective Availability.
In any case, modern GPS systems involve using the approximate twenty-four different satellites (military) that are in orbit in space at an estimated altitude of about eleven thousand miles which ensures that at any given point of time a GPS receiver will receive its signals from a minimum of six satellites that will be providing service at any point in time. There are therefore four satellites that are spaced at equal intervals in six different orbital paths and any or all of these satellites can provide signals to earth throughout the day and night and weather conditions too will not affect the quality of its signals.
At present, latency is a major obstacle and downside to using a GPS system. The sad truth is that each of the six satellites that send signals to earth will be situated at various distances from your set and the satellites too will also be rotating around the earth at very high speeds and this in turn leads to lack of synchronization in signals being received by a particular GPS set.
A GPS device is an excellent means of keeping track of where you are and most of the modern devices come loaded with a number of GPS maps that will ensure that you never get lost. Unfortunately, today the GPS is still not quite as accurate as we would like and accuracy is in fact only at its highest when the device is not in motion and is still.

GPS Tracking: Navigating the World
November 3, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Global Positioning Systems are now the standard navigational system worldwide. While it wasn’t always available to the public, it has quickly evolved as the favorite means of navigation by nearly everyone. Today, you can find a GPS system in almost every new car model, on cell phones, and several other devices. Where did the GPS system come from and how does it work?
The GPS system was initially created as a military tracking and navigation system. In 1983, after a Korean flight was shot down by Soviet fighter planes for violatng their airspace, Ronald Reagan made it available to the masses. He believed that the world needed this technology in order to avoid disasters like the Korean flight. Since then, it has evolved into much more than a military device.
The idea behind GPS is actually simple, however the implementation of it is complex. The United States has about 30 satellites that they sent up into space to orbit around the earth. What these satellites are used for is to send out a constant stream of microwave signals back down towards the earth. The GPS unit on the ground receives the signal from the satellite. It is then able to calculate the exact position, direction, and speed of itself based on these signals. Each time the receiver gets a signal from the satellite, several calculations are made immediately. The exact time that the signal was sent is sent along with the signal from the satellite. They also receive a message as to where the satellite is located and in what orbit. These messages travel so fast that they are actually moving at the speed of light. Any time you travel at the speed of light, you’re going to be able to get something from just outside earth to the ground almost instantaneously. This is why you are able to see exactly where your location is, even when you’re moving.
Today, a great number of cars have them built into the dash. Moreover, there are many competing detached navigation systems that you can buy. Devices like Tom-Tom will give you turn by turn directions to wherever you want to go. They even have a little voice that says “turn at the next right” or whatever you need to do. One of the newest devices to get GPS capabilities is the iPhone. Having detailed maps in your cell phone opens up a world of possibilities for everyone.
GPS tracking has the potential to help many people in every walk of life. If you’re lost, you definitely will be wishing that you had one at your disposal. At some point, we all need a map and need to know where we’re at. GPS is an advanced way to make your life easier. In the end, we could all use a little bit of help.
If you’re keen to use a powerful GPS tracking device, be sure you buy a GPS tracking device from a reputable vendor.

Portable GPS Systems: Handy Navigation at Your Fingertips
October 23, 2008 | Leave a Comment
With the new portable GPS system, you can definitely have a lot more for much less. These Portable units may cost hundreds of dollars less than permanent car mounted units. Even so, they can give you just as much convenience. The best part is that a portable device doesn’t need to stay stuck in your car. You can bring it out even for a walk. There are many different units though and choosing one can be tough. Here are some features you may want to consider when you make your choice.
Navigation Assistance
Navigation - A GPS system exists primarily for navigation. The first feature you should always consider should therefore be its ability to help you find your way. The most basic feature is a unit that will let you enter your destinations. The unit will then display maps and arrows that will point your path and the turns that you make.
Different GPS units, however, have different internal maps. You should check what your unit contains and how much it would cost you to update or include maps of other continents or countries. Newer units also have other features such as functions to help you find the shortest path or places according to your predetermined preferences.
Size
A major consideration when selecting a GPS should be its portability. You would want your GPS system to be small enough to fit in a pocket or a small pouch. A small and lightweight unit will allow you to bring it almost anywhere without inconvenience. It can easily be brought around even when you are out for a hike or a bike ride.
Of course, the smallest is not always the best. This is especially true if you have eyesight problems or if you have trouble operating small buttons. You need to make sure that your GPS is small enough to carry but big enough to make it easy to operate.
Battery Options
A good unit should have an internal battery. These batteries can easily be plugged and charged at home or in your car. Do consider though that various units have different battery durations. If you are fond of walking long distances then you should make sure that you have a unit that has batteries that will last for your entire journey.
Other Features
If you are every bit a techie, you may be interested in a couple of new features. Some portable units now carry Bluetooth capabilities, music players, photo viewers, movie players and more.
A reliable portable GPS can be everything you can ever hope for. With the many available options, you simply have to check what fits your budget and your tastes.

How does a GPS Tracker work?
October 8, 2008 | Leave a Comment
If you watch a lot of action-packed movies or TV series these days you must have been awed by how technology can be applied in so many things like crime investigation and tracking. One technology that is often inserted in so many modern movies is the GPS or Global Positioning System. This is one huge project of the US Department of Defense that is fully functional and indeed very useful. The most common application is the GPS tracker that is now installed in most modern cars.
GPS Technology
A GPS unit is mainly made up of three segments: the satellites, the control system, and the user.
There are over two-dozen satellites stationed just outside the earth’s atmosphere. These machines are about 11,000 nautical miles above the surface and they are funded and controlled by the US Department of Defense. In order to control these satellites, there are control or monitoring stations in several strategic locations across the globe. These are the units that get the information from the satellites, monitor, and analyze them for any significance in government operations. The user holds the receiver of the radio signals from the orbiting satellites. It can compute its distance from the satellite by using the time stamps on the radio waves that were sent.
To zoom in to a specific location, four satellites are needed. The accuracy is around 10-15 meters so it doesn’t really help if the object being tracked is a car that is about 3 meters long. This is why there have been upgrades like the Differential GPS, which helps give more accurate information on the precise location of a vehicle.
Application in cars
The GPS tracker technology has found a lot of use in so many things that need to be tracked. The primary application is in vehicles. With the GPS tracking device installed in the car, the owner is certain that he won’t get lost even in places unknown to him. The screen that is hooked on to the GPS system of his car will help him find his way onto the nearest main road leading to his destination – that is, if he got lost.
The best use for the GPS tracking system is in the unfortunate event that the car gets stolen. If you only have the ordinary alarm system installed, you can’t be sure about your car’s total safety. This is because any skilled car thief can easily override your alarm system and get away with your car – and you will never hear from it again.
The GPS tracker system is a genius of a tracker so your thief can’t really go far with your car. The minute you suspect that it’s been stolen, you can just report to the authorities immediately and they can tap into the GPS system so they can instantly check where your car is at that very instant.
The GPS tracker is also useful in many other ways like:
• Investigating on a cheating spouse
• Monitoring where your teen kids are
• Keeping track of your pets
• Guarding people on parole
• Tracking small units like cell phones

Aviation GPS Makes Flight Experiences More Enjoyable
September 29, 2008 | Leave a Comment
If you have your pilot’s license you may fly a different plane each time you go out. If this is the case, you will want to be sure that you have an aviation GPS that you can take with you into each of the planes. Not all planes are equipped with the most functional global positioning systems, but you should have one on board with you when you take off. Without it, you could run into a lot of problems such as obstacles and even where you should be landing could be a problem without a GPS.
The great thing about these systems is that they are not all that costly. In the past if you wanted a decent system such as this you would have to pay out a good sum of money. Today, you can find an airplane GPS from about $500.00 and up. The more money you spend the more bells and whistles the system will likely have, but you need to do a bit of shopping around to see what features you need and those which you can do without. If you are buying such a system on a budget you will definitely want to shop around to see what is out there.
Many pilots have found that these GPS offerings with headsets are really great. These are nice because a lot of the systems out there today actually have audio capabilities, telling the pilot about upcoming obstacles, about the terrain, points of interest and more. With the use of an aviation headset you will be able to communicate with any air traffic controllers as well as tap into the audio capabilities of the GPS system. This allows for the pilot to get all of the necessary information from the same place.
Flying without a GPS is sort of like flying with blinders on. While pilots flew without these systems in the past, there is really no need to do this today. In fact, most pilots find that the global positioning systems not only give them a different level of confidence when flying, but they may also make flying a lot more interesting as they note changes in the terrain, and the systems may also allow for them to view points of interest from the air as they fly over.
Not sure if you should shell out the money for such a device because you don’t fly that often? Luckily, a lot of the different models are not only for use in a plane, but also in the car and even in a boat. When you buy such a system you will find that it is very versatile, getting you where you need to go regardless of how you are traveling!

Shopping for an Airplane GPS
September 29, 2008 | Leave a Comment
An airplane GPS is something that most pilots consider necessary. While most of the commercial planes sold today have their own global positioning systems, this is not always the case with the smaller private planes. If you fly in these small, private planes chances are you will need to buy your own system. These systems can come in very handy as they will let you know what the terrain is like below you and will also let you know about points of interest.
When you begin shopping for a global positioning system you will find that there are a lot of different options. You’ll notice that the systems range in price from $500.00 to up over $8,000.00! The differences between these systems can be substantial, but the most expensive unit isn’t necessarily the unit that is best for you. You will want to shop around a bit and see what is out there and what features there are to choose from before you buy.
The first thing you will want to consider is screen size. Many of the aviation GPS units have a very small screen that will require that you actually pick the unit up and bring it closer to your face because the screen is just a few inches wide. Other units will have very large screens that will actually need to be attached to the interior of the plane. If you are looking for portability you will obviously want the smaller units, but then you have to look at if these smaller units fit your needs.
You will also want to look at whether or not the GPS has audio capabilities, as it is often very convenient to have the system talk to you and tell you what is going on. For instance, it can tell you about upcoming obstacles, points of interests, or the type of terrain that is located below. These are things that may be better heard than seen on a screen. Many of the systems come equipped with aviation headset ports that will allow you to hear the GPS system regardless of the noise that comes from the engine of the plane.
The best thing you can do when shopping for your system is to look into several different brands and look at the differences between the price points and what you can get for the money. Ask your friends and business partners what systems they use, read as many consumer reports as possible, and do some hands on shopping before you buy. Regardless of the price of the unit you buy, a GPS is an investment and you want to be sure that you get a system that will provide you with all of your needs as you go along.

With help of fleet tracking system enabled with GPS (Global Positioning System) you can monitor the deliberately longer travel path taken by vehicles and thus only genuine overtime payable if any.
Better Automation
Due to the GPS technology it is quite easy to keep track on the fleet transport operation automatically with aid of maps. Thus one can allocate the resources and personnel optimally and know about important locations and points along the route. Overall picture emerges of an advanced versatile system suitable for small, medium or large transport business. The maps provided by the GPS system is a ready reference tool for graphically tracing the roadmap of travel. The data recorded on the tracking system can be retrieved for analysis and inspections later on. It aids in enhancing the functional efficiency of the business.
Keeping an Eagle Eye
With help of Fleet tracking mechanism based on GPS technology you can keep in touch with the fleet vehicles at a distance over the monitor of gadget. Thus very efficient monitoring of the vehicles is made possible easily. This reduces the travel costs and time and at the same time controls the unproductive staff. An extra advantage of fleet tracking with aid of GPS technology is safety of the vehicle from being lifted or stolen.
Customer Satisfaction and Efficiency
Performance of the fleet transport assignment is possible within due time with help of fleet tracking system. There is knowledge of exact location and distances on the part of fleet owner. Employees may be sent to any site along the path of travel in case of any emergency or need. As the operations resumed are completed within the time limits, much of the precious time is thus saved. The fleet management operations like routing, dispatch, on-board information and security- all these aspects are taken care of in an efficient manner.
Higher Productivity
Like every field of business tackling the unproductive and work shirker employees is a great challenge to face. However thanks to the GPS infused fleet tracking a fleet owner can easily regulate the working behavior of the staff and spot the wrong doers. Exact location of the fleet and thus activities of driving staff is easily known to the owner on the monitor screen. On an average a productivity increase up to 40 % is seen over no fleet tracking condition. Higher ROI (Return On Investment) is achieved with GPS fleet tracking.
Better Fuel Savings
The costs of the fuel are rising worldwide owing to the higher prices of crude petroleum. Entrepreneurs and companies are trying hard to curtail the fuel costs by various methods of fuel conservation. With GPS fleet tracking much of the wastage of time, deliberately or inadvertently by drivers is reduced greatly by map enabled monitoring of the transportation routes. The overhead costs saved with tracking system may be used for further expansion of business.
