Decorative Hardware Dos and Don’ts
November 11, 2008 | 1 Comment
The home sales market has gone bust, so it looks like you are going to be hanging around in your place a lot longer then you expected. This in turn has left you wandering around the local warehouse hardware store scouting out ways to make your home a nice more comfortable place to live.
An Excellent Investment
Decorative hardware is an easy way to give your home the aesthetic boost that it needs, for several reasons. For one thing, it is generally easy to install if you have the right hand tools. Also, decorative hardware is something that will not escape notice. Much of it is at eye level and guests will in fact often have to touch it, as is with light and fan switches.
Start at Your Front Door and Porch
Your first target area should be your front door and porch. This is where the first impression is made on a potential buyer, like it or not. People like to see a good solid front door knob that looks like it is safe and durable. The same thing applies for lighting on the front porch. Don’t chince if you don’t have to, because the front porch and front door are both very important.
Something to Think About
You may have already noticed that you have innumerable choices in decorative hardware to select from at your local hardware store. The first thing that you will want to be careful of, is that you don’t buy components that cover a smaller area on the wall or ceiling that the component that you are replacing does.
You Don’t Need A Paint Job
This is because you will be stuck with an exposed ugly unpainted or faded area that you didn’t count on. If you don’t have matching paint to touch up these exposed areas around your component then you will have no choice but to paint all your walls and ceilings. Another tip, is to not go nuts and buy the most expensive decorative hardware available. Often moderately priced components look just fine when they are finally installed.

diy Security Alarms for Beginners
November 9, 2008 | 3 Comments
So, you’ve been thinking about a security system, but you don’t know where to begin. You’ve done some Internet searches and are overwhelmed by the choices. You can easily become confused when viewing such a large number of web sites. It’s time to get a piece of paper and jot down a few simple questions to ask yourself. Number one; where is your security system going, and what do you expect to get from it? This is an important question, because it will help you focus on the type of system you require. Securing a standalone shop/garage is quite different then securing an office. You would most likely choose different equipment to secure a factory, with an onsite office, compared to securing your home.
A standalone shop/garage would be easy to wire and having exposed wire inside is not usually a problem. However, in your home, wiring will need to be concealed inside the walls. Securing an office, where everyone will be going home at five o’clock, usually would only need a simple motion detector system. Alarm sensors on every window and door may not be necessary. A factory with an onsite office could have different needs. Employees may be working on weekends and need access to the factory but are not allowed in the office. In this case, you will need a system that has partitions, which would allow part of the security system to remain armed, while part is disarmed. If you find yourself confused by security terms or how alarm devices’ work, web sites such as securityalarminfo have sections dedicated to security terminology and alarm devise descriptions.
Question two; now that you know what you are securing, what will you expect from your system? Let’s say you are securing your home. Do you plan on using it only when you are away or will you be using it when you go to bed at night? What is the difference you ask yourself? All professional alarm systems allow you to arm them in one of two ways, usually referred to as ‘stay’ or ‘away’. Sensors that are labeled interior protection, such as motion detectors, are affected by the arming method selected. When arming the system in ‘stay’ mode, you are telling it that someone is staying home. In that case, you would want the windows and doors armed, but the interior protection disabled, so you can move around inside. Arming the system to ‘away’ would mean to put on both, perimeter and interior protection, since no one will be moving around inside.
Now let’s see how this applies to your situation. Are you the type of person who says, I don’t need security when I’m home, only when I’m away? If so, a simple motion detector system, such as may be used in an office or vacation home, could be right for you. If, on the other hand, your goal is to secure your family in at night, a complete perimeter protection system will be required. A typical professional alarm system, installed by a security company would normally recommend doing all of your moveable perimeter openings, as well as, one or two interior traps using motion detectors. This method would provide the maximum protection for your family while at home.
Question three; wired or wireless? This may seem like a simple question at first, but there is a big tradeoff between dollars and labor, when it comes to alarm systems. First of all, look at the windows and doors of your home to be sure it was not pre-wired during construction. This will make your installation much easier and we would recommend using the wires, if they are already in place. If not, are you able to drill down to the basement or up to the attic and run the wiring yourself? As unpleasant as that thought maybe, a weekend wiring project may save you a lot of money. Considering a wireless alarm system generally costs more than four times the cost of a wired alarm, your savings may be substantial.
Now that you have an organized plan, and some ideas about how you want your alarm system to work, it’s time to shop. Sticking with a nationally recognized name brand is a good idea for most diy installers. Manufactures like Honeywell/Ademco are industry standards and can be serviced by most companies. This may be important if you need a service call, by a local company, a year or two down the road. Wherever you decide to purchase, be sure that friendly support is available. Installation manuals for professional alarm systems are usually written in ‘tech speak’, you may need help understanding some of the instructions. Ask if support is free and available evenings and weekends, the time most diy installers will be working on their projects.

Search for Jobs Online
November 3, 2008 | 2 Comments
Just because you’re using the internet does not mean it’s going to be easy. The internet has everything readily available, but the catch is that it’s always there if you know where to look.
Google is fantastic when it comes to top of the line searches conducted, and I myself am an absolute fan of the Google search engine and their other internet services (like Gmail, Gtalk, Google Chrome, etc). But no matter how fantastic Google may be, if you don’t know how to do an internet job search for your job employment options, you will get little further then seeing an excellent search-engine at work to the best of its abilities.
When it comes to doing a career job search, there are job websites galore and many, articles on how to do a job search, and still there are a few simple steps one must follow in order to ensure their job hunting success.
The first step is to decide on what type of job employment you are looking for. Are you a fan of books? Maybe you would suit a job as a librarian. Do you just love learning new programs and designing software? Maybe you would suit being Software Engineer. Choices in the market are limitless; it is just the job logistics you need to finalize.
The second step is to understand what makes the job search complete and workable. Unfortunately, there are many who believe that by solely reading the classifieds they would be able to get quick results and are often disappointed with the slow progress they seem to be making. In all of that, they end up spending all their effort on very few results.
You and I both know that we live in a very modern world, and much of our daily interaction with others, our jobs, lifestyle, etc relies on none other then the internet. There are many job sites as I’ve said before, and you can log on to just about any one of them in order to receive job availabilities, but my advice would be to look for the ones which have resume services as they normally have some combo packages for both making your resume and opening your account. Some even have job
Remember that there is no use in putting all your eggs in one basket so to speak, and you will get the most results if you apply to more then one website that caters to the local area in which you live, or as per your job location needs.
An important thing about searching for jobs on the internet is that it never takes a holiday and is ALWAYS available to you…unless of course – true to Hollywood style - America (God save her) is going down and the rest of the world with her.
But internet or no, we’ve already established the need to not ‘put all your eggs’ in the same basket, and that includes not giving up on those oh so faithful classifieds.
All the best with your search for jobs, good luck!

Simply telling the right story of your life
September 26, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Everything in life seems to have gotten more complicated these days. Nothing seems to be simple and straightforward. From ordering a coffee to choosing a glass of wine in a bar – it’s all about choices and options now. Does anyone even remember when a black or white coffee was all you ever asked for? Now it’s lattes, Americanos, mochas, expressos, small, medium, large, skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, decaf or normal, organic, Fair Trade, the list goes on. It’s no different with wine. Once it was a glass of house white or red, now there are dozens of bottles, brands, regions, grapes, glass sizes and all the rest to choose from.
It’s all meant to make things better for us: more choice. But it can also mean more chance of making the wrong choice and so getting it wrong. And the same is true of putting together your Curriculum Vitae. Seriously.
It wasn’t that long ago that nobody minded much how your CV looked so long as it was neat, legible and contained the relevant information. Three and four page CVs were not unheard of, or frowned upon. Individualisation of your CV was not uncommon either, and none of the above was a barrier to getting further in the job application process.
Not any more. Compiling a CV these days requires all the precision of a circus acrobat team in order to ensure it says just the right things in just the right way. And where once one standard, generic CV did the job of acting as an application for every job, now each CV you send out needs to be tailored to the specific needs of the company you are applying to. And it’s all got to be neatly and orderly presented on one or two pages, all the while illustrating your more than competent ICT skills.
The term ‘Curriculum Vitae’ literally translated means ‘the story of your life’, and so that is what it contained. Nowadays it really means ‘the story of the relevant parts of your life relating to the job and company you are applying for. It is also more and more a direct marketing tool, used to promote you and your skills, abilities and suitability for the job over and above all the other candidates.
It is, therefore, an essential tool for getting you noticed and as far as the interview stage in the process of securing a job.
It’s enough to put you off even bothering to start writing your CV. But then starting is often the hardest part anyway, so the whole process can appear somewhat daunting. However, help is at hand. There are, out there in the world of the Internet that is fast becoming everyone’s best friend, websites dedicated to helping you, in easy to understand, step-by-step stages, how to prepare the best possible CV that you can for the job you will be applying for.
With loads of hints, tips and explanations as well, the process of putting your CV together has never been simpler to do, enabling you to present the right story of your life, in the right way, to the right potential employer.

September 25, 2008 | Leave a Comment
As lifestyle needs and services evolve through time, more job positions are created. In fact, if you would be browsing the Classified Ads nowadays, you can encounter certain terms that seem to not exist decades ago. Terms like white collar jobs, blue collar jobs, and home based jobs are present, along with the popular ‘hospitality management jobs’.
But what are hospitality management jobs anyway? If you’re not familiar with this kind of professional field, here are the essentials that you need to know about the said area of expertise.
Basic Definition
To put it short, these are basically jobs or professions that generally deal with hospitality. The main principle here is that you cater services to other people so that they would feel more welcome wherever place that the service is catered. Thus, the main job here is to become hospitable and accommodating to whomever you are serving.
Even though the given definition seems simple, you should know that this does not only pertain to one specific job. There are a number of ways that you can be hospitable and make someone feel at home. This is why there are also various fields under hospitality management that you can venture into, if you think you have that kind of niche for the position.
The Crew
In the field of hospitality, it doesn’t really matter if you would be serving your client face to face or not. In fact, more often than not, jobs in this kind of field would include service in the backstage arena such as chefs, planners and other positions that involve planning and preparations. However, positions subjected to more exposure to customers are usually those that involve upfront services like receptionists, waiters, waitresses, concierge, park administrators, casino personnel, and the like.
The Working Environment
There is also a vast field of choices of where you can work in this kind of field. For instance, restaurants and cafe’s could be one good starting point. Additionally, you can work in bed and breakfast accommodations and hotels. Casinos are also one good working environment where you could expect to have big tips. Resorts and museums are also viable. And the best part is you can work in cruise ships and have the chance to travel all over the world!
It is also possible that you put up your own business. This is much true if you have decided to specialize one a course related to culinary arts. You can put up your own restaurant, if you want to. If you specialized on the tourism field, you could put up your own travel agency.
Compensation
The good thing with this kind of career is that it is very lucrative. Your effort is very much rewarded equally with your salary. However, how big you earn would definitely depend on your position and specialty. Sometimes there are companies that pay by the hour. There are companies too that pay annually.
Education
Since there are different job positions in this kind of career, there are also different requirements. For instance, there are jobs that don’t really require a diploma and accept high school graduates. Usually positions like these would include housekeeping services of hotels. There are positions however that require educational backgrounds like chefs in which you should have finished a degree in culinary arts.
In general, you can take Hotel and Restaurant Management courses if you want to. This would be a very good advantage on your part. Tourism courses are also viable. This is recommended if you want to specialize on a tourism oriented hospitality job.

Hospitality: Where To Look For Hospitality Job Openings
September 25, 2008 | Leave a Comment
The growing sector of hospitality services seem to be unstoppable these days. This is very much evident with the continuous increase in the demand for personnel along with the number of hospitality job openings that you can find posted in almost all kinds of classified ads.
So, where exactly could you find openings for this kind of jobs? Well, there are a number of places that you could begin your search with. Here are some of them.
Hotels
One of the biggest industries in demand for this kind of jobs would be the hotel industry. So, if you are considering a career in this kind of industry, it is recommended that you check out with your local hotels. Try visiting their HR department or their Web sites and check if they have some openings that you might be able to fill in.
There’s a vast number of choices of positions if it’s a hotel you are eyeing. This could give you a more flexible line up of positions to apply for. Also, if there are new hotels being built within the area, then this would be good news for you. Get hold of this kind of opportunity. For sure they would be in need for people to man their newly built property and you could be one of the many that they need.
Airlines
Airlines are also one good source in which you can look for openings. The higher gas prices are going, the more do people resort to flying than travelling by car. Also, with the development of globalization, you can expect more people travelling the globe via air. Thus, this means only one thing: airlines are in need of people to take care of matters for them.
Restaurants
People love to eat. Admit it, there is nothing more fulfilling than giving your palate something new to taste .It’s because of this that a new restaurant is built every once in a while. So, if you see a new restaurant being set up, it is better to contact the management and ask them whether they may have some openings that you could apply for.
Museums
Museums are staples for most places. Most of the time, people don’t consider working in museums since they think that only those walking encyclopaedia type of persons are the only ones that are given the permission to work in such kind of environments. However, this is considered to be one of the biggest misconceptions done by people regarding the industry.
Casinos
Although gambling is not being promoted for younger children, this is a very lucrative industry and is considered to be the playground of adults. Just like hotels, casinos are built quite often nowadays. So, next time you see a casino still on its building phase, take the opportunity! Grab the company name and get to know whether they have some openings of not.
Resorts
Resorts and Vacation properties, like hotels, are other good starting points too in locating job offerings. Whether you may be a life guard or room service personnel, one thing’s for sure: they have positions that need to be filled. A lot of people are now seeking for vacations.
This is a very realistic fact regarding the said industry. So, try considering positions in this kind of working environment.

Still Stuck in a “Should” Career? Start Your Career-Change Now!
September 18, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Ahh the guilt of wanting something more! I don’t know how many times I have heard this statement…”I should just be happy where I am. Many people would be thrilled to have my job.” This is often said by someone with an unhappy, resigned look on their face. This person is usually, when you get to the core of it, scared to death to move forward and pursue their dreams. Robert Fritz said it so well, “If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want and all that is left is a compromise.” When you hear yourself saying the word “should” you can be assured that a compromise is nearby! Filling your life with compromise is not a tactic which will lead to a passion-filled career or life. Instead it leads to boredom and a feeling of uselessness.
The feeling of unhappiness in your career is a red flag from your wise self saying, “Listen up! It is time to head a different direction.” Sometimes this red flag will mean that it is time to change companies other times it is a call to a new career which you have been putting off and sometimes it is calling for a change in position or the beginning of a new business. Whatever the direction your intuition takes you, if you listen and follow you will be pleasantly surprised at where you end up.
One of the differences between successful people and those who spend their lives compromising is the willingness to follow their intuition. Successful people follow their intuition and have results that are almost monotonously positive. Most of us are not very tuned into our intuition and need to spend time learning to listen and feel. It begins with taking quiet time to just hear our inner voice. Then it is all about having the courage to follow that voice.
I am not advocating dumping the job and heading off towards your dreams unless you can financially afford it. What I am saying is to stop and take a look at what your voice is saying and honor it. Look at why you are unhappy with your work. Ask yourself what you need to be happy? What strengths do you have? Are you using them in this current job? What are your passions? Then begin with small steps to explore your interests and look for opportunities to begin your new path. Change that limiting belief “I should be happy where I am.” to “I am excited about looking for new career or business opportunities.” “I deserve to be joyful in my career.” Life is way to short to turn your back on your dreams. Start today to listen to that wise inner voice and watch the adventures begin!
