How to Secure a Nursing School Grant
November 16, 2008 | Leave a Comment
It can be a difficult task to figure out how to secure the financing necessary in order to pursue a career in nursing. When beginning this process, it can take some time and persistence. However, you can find many nursing school grants which can help move you in the right direction.
With a little guidance, you can learn how to secure a nursing school grant, which may pay for some, if not all of the costs for your nursing education. Be sure to give yourself enough time to locate and complete all of the necessary forms. Securing a nursing grant requires diligence, but it is well worth it for the benefit of not beginning your nursing career with large debts that may take years to repay.
When starting this process, it is a good idea to seek advice from an enrollment or career counselor. Ask them if there are grants for nursing education available from the higher educational facility in which you are looking to receive your nursing education. You may also want to schedule a meeting with the director of the nursing program. This meeting can help provide you with enrollment information as well as possible grants, which can make enrolling in the school much easier.
Nursing is a profession which is in high demand, and because of this grants may be difficult to acquire. Leave no stone uncovered during your search for a grant. The payoff is well worth the effort. Get in touch with other nursing schools about grants that may be available. The school you may be attending may have a completely different list of grants than your second choice school.
The nursing schools, community colleges, and universities offering nursing education to students, are not the only resources for helping you to find nursing school grants. The community where you live is likely to have few grants that you may be eligible for because of your nursing educational aspirations. Contacting community development services in your area is one option worth looking into. Other good options include asking church, civic, and other community leaders including your own employer, for leads to available grants that you may be able to obtain to help minimize the costs of attending nursing school.
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing is an excellent resource which can help you explore ways to secure a nursing school grant. Federally subsidized educational and nursing grants are also available and worth checking. FAFSA also supplies helpful information about financial assistance.
Get in touch with local doctors and medical centers in your area. They often have apprenticeships and other opportunities that offer multiple benefits to those pursing nursing careers. Some medical groups offer grants to those pursuing the nursing profession. They also have contacts within the medical community that can lead to your discovery of a grant to help you afford your nursing school education. A work arrangement with them is an excellent way for you to acquaint yourself with the duties involved in nursing while developing the skills needed to help you find the job you want after graduation.
You may have never thought about contacting local, social, political, civic groups and associations. These groups can be beneficial to your search for nursing school grants. For example, family friends and old acquaintances may be able to help your search with valuable information for finding nursing school grants. You have nothing to lose by asking around. In the end, it is well worth it because of the possible gain in financial assistance. By approaching them on your own, or having your parents ask their contacts about the availability of possible grants, you may find the connection which will help you secure a grant to attend nursing school.
The internet provides instant, convenient access to vast amounts of useful information in your hunt for securing a nursing school grant. Exercise caution when utilizing services such as requests for information mailed to your home or workplace, or in filling out online applications to protect your personal information from identity theft. It is an unfortunate reality that identity thieves are everywhere, and this includes the internet. Only provide your personal information after checking the legitimacy of a site. Most of these websites have proper technology in place to help prevent your information from being stolen.
Let the hunt begin for securing a nursing school grant or multiple grants. Finding a grant is important because it helps reduce the costs of your nursing education. By utilizing these suggestions, you should have a much easier time finding a grant which allows you to attend nursing school. One tip to remember is to contact several schools that you would like to attend. Each school may have access to different grants which are available for an education in the field of nursing. Keep searching because new nursing grants become available throughout the year and eventually the grant you have been searching for may appear.

Different resourcing methods for recruitment agencies
October 5, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Here are some of the most common ways of finding candidates in the UK recruitment market.
Advertising on general jobs boards. Around the UK market there are a few large and very well established jobs boards. One such example is monster.co.uk, which is very appropriately named as these boards are huge. they have traffic levels and visitor levels which are monstrous and the number of applications going through the site are vast, sounds great so far! The draw back is in the lack of specificity. A job advertised on these boards is viewed by a wide and often non specific audience, generating an equally non specific and usually large response. On the one hand recruitment agencies can be sure to receive plenty of Cvs but may have to allocate a lot of time to sift through them all.
Headhunting. This is the act of going out and looking for someone to meet a recruiters job spec. One big advantage is that you will go after people who definitely hit the spot, rather than finding people and having to dig to see whether they do. In addition, generally candidates found this way are not on the market with other recruitment agencies and so there is less chance of loosing them mid process.
Paper advertising. Perhaps it was less than a decade back that paper adverts were the only source of candidates for many recruitment agencies. The benefit of paper advertising is that it can provide an excellent profile in the market place. There is certainly something about having your brand image appearing glossy magazines which portrays recruitment agencies as one of the lead players in the market. In terms of candidate delivery, the paper adverts results are now dwarfed by the comparably cheap internet packages available.
Industry specific job web sites. It has felt like there is a new jobs board to look at going live every week in recent months, many set up as hobby sites alongside full time jobs. In theory, both advertisers and candidates would far rather deal with a board in their own sector. However, there are so many now which simply aren’t serious business propositions that it is possible to sign up to a site without any real presence in the market.
International resourcing Services. In simple terms these agencies perform the first part of the recruitment process arriving at a short list of Cvs. They will subscribe to a variety of CV databases enabling them to source candidates for any recruiter saving them time and money. The obvious flaw is that the resourcer is unlikely to have any experience ni niche specific sectors.
These are just some of the ways in which modern recruitment agencies are sourcing new candidates. No doubt, the next few years will introduce further technology to advance the recruitment process.

The Endless Advantages OF GPS
October 2, 2008 | Leave a Comment
With the development of technology, it is no astonishment that the world seems to be growing smaller. Communicating with another person from the other side of the world has become instantaneous. In today’s world, almost everything is possible with the latest that technology has to offer, which brings endless advantages to users around the world. One of the products of the continuous and advancing developments in technology is the GPS (Global Positioning System). GPS is global satellite navigational system which enables a GPS receiver to determine its specific location, direction and speed by measuring the distance between the receiver and three or more (out of the 24) medium Earth satellites. The GPS technology is currently being used for a multitude of military applications. Aside from its important application in the military, there is a wide array of civilian applications for the GPS technology, and numerous advantages to worldwide users. A GPS tracking device can be incorporated in mobile phones, vehicles, even a person – or any type of object – that you would like to locate. GPS tracking devices are a definite must for people who are always on the go and those who are fond of updating themselves with the latest technological revelations.
You can evaluate the value of the GPS technology by taking a look at the numerous advantages of a GPS tracking device. One of the most distinguished advantages of a GPS tracking device is when it is used as a vehicle navigator. If you are new to a place, you do not have to worry about getting lost and asking for directions if your car has a GPS tracking device. Here, you will be able to determine the precise location, calculate the distance and verify the direction that you need to take in order to arrive at a particular place. The same goes for boats which have a GPS tracking device, to make it easier to find your direction as you sail.
Another popular benefit of a GPS tracking device is when it is embedded as a feature of your mobile phones, palmtops or personal digital assistants. You can use this feature for direction-finding purposes, distance calculation and a lot more. Additionally, GPS tracking devices are used by sports enthusiasts to calculate the range that they traveled as they work out. Lastly, and this is probably one of the most important uses of a GPS tracking device – is just what the name implies – ‘to track’ or determine the location of something. Whether it is a stolen vehicle, a lost pet, monitoring the location of wild or endangered species, or for surveillance purposes – a GPS tracking device definitely provides a multitude of applications, benefits and uses to suit most of your personal needs.

Hospitality: Tips In Finding Hospitality Career Internships
September 25, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Hospitality career is one of the industries that would require having an internship. This is because of the nature of the job itself. Practical skills are considered to be much important in this kind of career rather than theoretical knowledge and competency. However, a mix of both is still preferred.
The Course And Its Internship
If you’ll be studying this kind of course, for sure you would be required to undergo internship during your last year of college. There are various sources in which you can find internship programs and for sure, you would not have a hard time finding one. However, the challenge here is how you can find a good internship program.
School Provision
For some students, finding a program would not be a problem anymore. Not because they have lots of connections, but simply because their school would be the one to provide the program itself for them. Most schools offering hospitality courses nowadays usually partner up with an establishment. For instance, your school could have an agreement with a prominent hotel, resort or restaurant in your area.
Here, they would usually have a deal in which students of your school would automatically be interns in the establishment once they have had reached that certain part of the curriculum where internship is held. If your school would be the one to provide you with an internship program, then good for you!
Going International
One good thing with this type of career is that you can easily access international companies. This benefit does not only start when you are working already but even at your internship. There are a lot of companies out there that hire hospitality students and provide them international internships. The good thing here is that these are most of the time paid.
Some companies that offer international internships also partner up with schools. If your school has this kind of program then good for you. If not, don’t lose hope. It is still possible for you to get into a program like this. All you have to do is contact the company. For sure they would be more than happy to assist you with processing your documents and living arrangements in the country you would be going to.
The Internet
If your school would not be the one to provide you with a program any you are to look for an internship by yourself, one good place to look in would be the Internet. With a little effort of browsing, you can find various companies that are looking for interns. However, it may be tough for you to find a paid internship program on the net. Nevertheless, finding one that is not paid would be quite easy.
Big Companies
One thing you should remember if you’ll be internship hunting is that you should not be afraid of big companies. It is possible for you to land an internship position with big and well-known companies. Do not be blinded by the notion that they only hire professionals or those that has extensive experience in the field. They do hire students as interns. So, don’t be afraid to approach them and send your CV.
Local Establishments
Sometimes the best internship programs are found not with the big names but with the local ones. Don’t hesitate to ask local companies or establishments around your neighbourhood if they have programs in store for you. However, do not expect to get a high pay with such kind of companies.

The Training Paradox: Train Them and They’re More Valuable to Me and My Competitors!
September 21, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Training is a paradox. If you train your staff, they are not just more valuable to you, they are also more valuable to your competitors. Once they have your training, maybe they will simply leave.
The Solution:
• Hire those who learn fast
• Use just-in-time training
For years consultants have told me to train my employees, that training makes them more productive. But when I do, the employees often walk out the door and some other company gets the benefit of all the money and time I spent!
Like a lot of businesspeople, this advice bugged me and confused me. I knew it was true: better-trained people performed better. Then I started implementing just-in-time training.
This approach is much better, and your competitors don’t get a freebie. Create valuable bundles of tasks and responsibilities for new employees—meaningful roles—as soon as they join you. Creating doable, real roles early on requires unbundling the elements of more complex existing roles and creating new, narrower jobs that people learn quickly to start contributing immediately.
This approach gives your employees a great sense of ownership in their work. It also leads to a greater quality commitment, since their reputations are tied directly to observable results within their control. As a person gets up to speed on each set of tasks and begins performing them ably, your goal is to keep adding new responsibilities. Train them in stages for each new work bundle.
The good news is that you can give pieces of important work to people who don’t yet have the depth and wisdom for the whole job. However, you can’t just do it and walk away. This requires a high degree of engagement—ongoing negotiation, coaching, and measuring—from you and your managers.
The real challenge for your company is to create an environment in which all your employees are, to some extent, knowledge workers. That means training everybody, but not for the long haul. Train one hour, one day, and one week at a time.
Most people today want to learn what they need to learn when they need to learn it—and not because they are lazy or have short attention spans. Learning just-in-time is the only way to learn given the tidal waves of information we all deal with. We must be strategic about learning. “Will this be useful today or tomorrow?” becomes the key question.
There are hundreds of corporate universities in the U.S., including a high percentage at Fortune 500 companies. They range from bad to excellent, just like “real” universities. But this is the future—specific skills to do specific jobs in your company now.
Yes, put new employees through boot camps. But if you used to do a ten-day camp, make it three days and get them out working faster. Then follow up regularly with half-day, specific training.
If you want real talent in your new hires, focus on their ability to learn quickly and reduce your focus on the skills they bring now.
Once hired, employees are matched with an initial relatively simple job or task. Deliver training to get them exactly what they need to know so they can be job-ready tomorrow or next week. Then an experienced employee spends the minimum time necessary to teach the new worker how to accomplish the first task.
The new person does not shadow the more experienced person, taking notes, watching and expecting to learn by osmosis. Rather it is a low-cost, one-on-one boot camp for maximum impact fast.
Whenever fresh responsibilities are added to the new person’s job, somebody with more experience provides hands-on instruction—always the minimum amount to ensure that new responsibilities are learned.
Will your employees lose the big picture with this ‘piecemeal’ training? Potentially they could. The low cost way to avoid it (and also build teamwork) is regular team meetings to keep everyone informed of your strategy.

Job Search Engines – What Are The Best Job Search Engines?
September 20, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Times are definitely tough economically and many of us have either lost our jobs or are in danger of losing them. Looking for new jobs can be a challenge. Local newspapers seem to have smaller and smaller ‘help wanted’ sections and rarely carry listings for opportunities that are beyond your local area. The solution could be job search engines.
What are Job Search Engines/Websites?
Job search websites are massive databases of available job listings which can be searched through by job seekers like you. The jobs can be searched in a wide variety of ways, including by location, job title, company name, experience required, field or industry, and more. You can even combine criteria to help you pin down your search more specifically.
These online search engines are even better because they are usually free to use. Many also provide additional services, such as job advice and resume posting for no additional charge.
The Pros and Cons of Job Search Engines
Job search engines have plenty of advantages. For example, you can search through new listings 24/7. You don’t have to wait for the morning paper to scour the ads. Plus, employers can post new jobs 24/7 so you’re more likely to see fresh opportunities daily instead of in local papers.
Another benefit is the searching capabilities. You don’t have to browse through all of the listings to find the ones that are best suited for you. Plus, most job search engines allow you to customize your search requirements and have daily or weekly job updates sent directly to your email so you’ll always know when an interesting position becomes available. You can also act faster.
Job search engines also make it easy to apply online which saves you time (your application is delivered instantly to the eager employer) and money (you don’t have to print your resume or use a stamp).
Unfortunately, there are some disadvantages. Most of the job search engine databases contain tons of legitimate jobs from well-respected companies but you’ll also find quite a few get-rich-quick scams, too.
Another disadvantage is that some job search engines do not keep their listings updated. You’re likely to find postings for many ads that were filled a long time ago. That can be frustrating. However, most of the engines do allow you to organize your search by most recently posted opportunities which improves your chances of finding available work.
Choosing the Best Job Search Websites
Currently, the best job search engines available are Monster.com and Yahoo’s Hotjobs.com. Both of these sites provide all of the advantages above, plus plenty of extra features such as the free resume posting which will increase your odds of landing a great job. Additionally, these are two of the biggest names in the industry so companies that are going to post their job openings online will most likely do so at either one or both of these sites before anywhere else.
Finally, you’re going to find the most search options at these sites and both will email you news about recent postings that meet your specifications. That makes it easier to find a new job even in a competitive market.
There’s more on job search engines here including information about the best job search websites, Monster and the Yahoo job search engine.

Top Tips to improve Selling in Sales Jobs
September 13, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Pretty much every sales course you have ever been on will have a section of features and benefits. To be more specific, the need to covert every feature to a benefit for the customer in order to increase your chances of a sale. One rather crude measure I remember was to add ‘which means that’ after every feature slipped out of my mouth, to try and drill home the need to convert each feature to a benefit.
To this day, I still don’t believe many sales people do this at all, let alone do it well. People sell to me in my present role everyday, yet nobody seems to latch on to the essence of true ‘benefits selling’.
Contrary to popular belief, sale jobs are not about taking a product or service and pushing it onto a person with no need or even want for the product. Images of insurance and double glazing spring to mind. Good selling is about finding people who have already made a decision to buy, and your job is to persuade them to choose your particular offering over a competitor. With this in mind, success in sales jobs becomes broadly a two part process
a) Finding enough people who have made a decision to buy
b) Persuading them to buy your particular product.
a) is a complex subject all on it’s own involving aspects of marketing and a variety of sales skills. For b), mastery of true ‘benefits’ selling is essential.
The key to effective selling is to truly understand what is going on in the mind of the buying. In particular, to understand the following
A decision to buy is usually made on a rational and conscious level (eg I need a car)
The decision what to buy, is usually made on an emotional and sometimes subconscious level ( I want to buy a Porsche)
To explain this a little further, consider the purchase of our family holiday. Clearly the decision to buy is both conscious and rational, that is, we need a holiday! We actually buy an ‘all inclusive’ holiday. There are many clear benefits for us, it’s cost effective with all food included and alcohol. It saves time not having to shop for food, prepare food etc. It’s family orientated so there will be other children for ours to play with, the list goes on. So what was I thinking of when I choose this holiday?
Can you remember the last time you cooked a big meal, perhaps Christmas dinner? Imagine the moment you’ve just tucked away your second helping of Christmas pud, Uncle Jo and Aunt Hilda are settling into the Wizard of Oz with a glass of sherry…and you retire to the Kitchen to the biggest mound of dishes you’ve ever seen. You spent 3 hours preparing it, half an hour eating it, it will take another hour to clear it all, everyone else is now relaxing, was it really worth it?
Well that rotten feeling sticks with me every time I know I have to prepare food for the whole family and clear up afterwards. With the holiday, I was being presented with the opportunity to have my food prepared by someone else, eaten by me, with all the dirty dishes taken away by someone else while I read a paper….3 times a day everyday…fantastic, I’ll take three!
Inside every buyer of any product or service, lies a totally unique set of powerful emotions fuel by their past experiences, which used correctly are the most powerful motivators you could imagine. Your job as a sales person, is to find and unlock these powerful emotions, alongside the presentation of your product.
There are a variety of skills required to unlock these powerful emotions all centered around questioning skills, and this is a topic all on it’s own for another article. Aside of this, next time you present your product or service, spend some time considering the broader impact of the features of your product. What are the benefits these features bring to your client, and can you latch on to any powerful emotions that may be associated with these benefits. Good questioning may focus around emotions previously associated with products in this area, positive and negative.

Have the confidence to go for what you want with online learning
September 12, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Well it’s my last year of university and I am looking forward to completing my degree with good grades, a wealth of knowledge behind me and a good outlook on the future. After I get my results I am going to meet my fellow students where we will celebrate with a few drinks and a celebratory meal.
The only difference between us and the thousands of other students who will receive their degrees this year is that we are students taking our degrees online rather than in classrooms. In fact this will only be the third time that I and my fellow students have met each other face to face.
I have been doing my online degree with Kaplan open learning. As a mum with a full time job I didn’t think that I would ever have the opportunity to go back to university. There was so much that I wanted to do with my life but as I lacked a degree I also found that I lacked the confidence to apply for the jobs that I really wanted.
That all changed when my daughter came home from college one day and told me that she was thinking of doing an online degree after she finished her final exams in June. At first I didn’t like the idea but the more I looked into it the more I started thinking that it might be something I would like to do myself. In the end my daughter decided to go away to university to meet more people and experience a bit more independence but I was still hooked on the idea of home learning.
I finally decided on the best accredited online degree for my and applied. More and more UK Universities are posting their resources online for the benefit of students by putting up resources such as podcasts, notes and powerpoint presentations to help students catch up when they are busy with assignments. Putting a whole course online is just taking it one step further and seems to make perfect sense. A quality resource is Kaplan Distance Learning.
I would feel out of place in lecture halls full of bright young students and the idea that I would have to commute and take time off work to attend hourly lessons was ludicrous. This coupled with the huge amount of money it would have taken to send my daughter and myself to university gave me confidence that I was doing the right thing by learning at home and in my own time.
I chose a course in Business Management as It was something I was interested in and believed would help take me to a higher level in my current job as a sales team coordinator. The course exceeded my expectations and the joy of learning an interesting subject in an innovative atmosphere gave me a huge sense of achievement.
I honed my internet skills navigating round a ‘virtual’ classroom where you could compare notes and chat to other students which was not hard as there were only 24 of us in the class. I felt as though I received a huge amount of support from tutors and at no point did I feel like I was doing anything less than a worth while and beneficial degree.
Thanks to my online university I now have the confidence to always go for what I want.
